Eliminating the source of your pain.
Augmented Soft Tissue Mobilization
Chronic pain may develop over time as the result of trauma to the muscles or tissues. Injury or overuse will result in the production of scar tissue which results in pain. Accumulation of this unhealthy tissue restricts natural movement and decreases blood flow to the injured area resulting in weakness, pain and risk of reoccurring injury.
While traditional massage therapies have shown to be beneficial to these injuries, they tend to take a long time, and do not always reach the root of the problem. ASTM is a system of tools and specific techniques used by a certified physical therapist to assess the tissues and breakdown the scar tissue These tools are specially designed to give the therapist a more in-depth feel of the underlying deep tissues and allows them to control the amount of pressure used when treating. This disruption in the unhealthy tissues initiates reabsorbing of the inappropriate scar tissue and facilitates a flow of healing activity resulting in the remodeling of the affected soft tissues.
Common Diagnosis that may benefit from ASTM
- Planter fasciitis
- Carpal tunnal
- Achilles tendonitis
- Rotator cuff strain
- Tennis elbow
- ITB syndrome
- Chronic muscle sprain
Mary Lou Corcoran Physical & Aquatic Therapy offers this state of the art technique with an ASTM certified physical therapist. One of the greatest benefits of ASTM is the efficiency of the treatment. Most courses of treatment last only four to six weeks with results beginning to show within 2-4 sessions. Unlike anti-inflammatory medications, ASTM actually fixes the source of the problem in a non-invasive manner. Patients also benefit from the ability to continue their normal activities in-between treatments.
